Gli spiriti del Castel Menardo
Installation in an Abbey,
Serramonacesca, 2022
Castel Menardo in Serramonacesca is a ruin located in the Maiella Nature Reserve in the Abruzzo region of Italy. Built around the 13th century, the castle most likely served to protect the nearby monastery of San Liberatore a Maiella.
Due to its severely destructed state, little can be found out about the structure the castle once must have had—knowledge that might have offered insight into the ways of life that once unfolded there.
Building on archaeological research conducted by my family, I continue this still nascent investigation, through different approaches to drawing.
The installation at the abbey presented around 70 frottage drawings in various sizes, from approximately 20 × 30 cm to 70 × 150 cm (graphite on paper), taken from the murals and the still-visible historic floor architecture of the castle, as well as around 50 ghost drawings (graphite and chalk on paper, each approximately 30 × 42 cm).
