In my artistic practice, I generally understand my drawings as visual contributions to the margins and limits of my research: where words fail and intuition begins, the act of drawing starts. Drawing generates a different kind of thinking and serves as a reflective retreat from the visual and physical overwhelm that often accompanies my research in image-rich archives and my wandering through large cities.

In this work, I develop multiple series of drawings in parallel: The Archive Drawings respond directly to the photographic material found on the streets, approaching it through the lens of Walter Benjamin’s On the Concept of History (as a manifesto). Among other things I search for the most inconspicuous of all transformations and for cultural artifacts, which simultaneously bear witness to acts of barbarism. I observe how these artifacts continue to transform within interior spaces, and I ask myself, what it means to stand for a photograph in front of a harem portrayed on a wall tapestry [excerpt]…
